Aminatou Haidar’s actions are part of a political agenda set outside of Morocco, pointed out Taib Fassi Fihri, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation. "We already know that the work she has been doing does not fall under the positive and noble umbrella of human rights, but was a part of a political agenda set outside Morocco," he claimed in an interview on "France 24" TV channel on Tuesday during the 8th session of the Morocco-EU Association Council in Brussels.

The minister said that Haidar put herself voluntarily in this situation to seek attention, and he underlined the fact that she has offended all Moroccans by renouncing her nationality and handing over her passport.

“A passport is not a toy to be played - a symbol of nationality ought not to be insulted”, he said, adding that the document enabled her to travel and enter and leave the Kingdom.

Fassi Fihri also pointed out that all the political parties in Morocco are unanimous about not giving in to blackmail, and questioned the timing chosen by Haidar and her “sponsors” to act in this way.

“The question we are now asking is why has she chosen this precise moment, when we are in the middle of discussing a new round of negotiations within the framework of the United Nations, to cause problems by turning up with Spanish journalists to announce, for the first time, that she is not Moroccan."

“This woman gave up her nationality and must take responsibility for this. She is free to go wherever she wants, and since she is a Polisario member, she can join her partners who continue to besiege people in the Algerian territory where there is neither census, nor free access for people,” the minister said, and hoped that “the preoccupation with humanitarian concerns be broadened to include the thousands of people concerned.”

Fassi Fihri revealed that Haidar had “used and abused” her Moroccan nationality and passport for decades, recalling that she was a civil servant at the Equity and Reconciliation Commission, and had also been a beneficiary from the same authority. She had presented herself to the Commission as a Moroccan, and had received significant compensation of €48,000, the minister reminded us.

“She has put herself in this position, and has gone back to where she came from, the Canary Islands, in accordance with international organizations’ transport regulations”, explained Mr Fassi Fihri.

Furthermore, the Minister emphasized the fact that those who had orchestrated “Operation Haidar” (Algeria and Polisario) were solely responsible for the political impasse in the Sahara, and pointed out that the major issue for Morocco was security in the region and peace for the populations in its Southern Provinces.
