School Profile 2009-2010
College Board School Code: 625180 149 Rue Christophe Colombe Tangier 90000, Morocco Overview. From its founding in 1950, our school has stood for cultural diversity, open-mindedness, and harmony between nationalities and backgrounds. Our history is truly original and has been shared with some of the biggest names in the history of American arts. Paul Bowles, Tennessee Williams, William Borroughs, Bruce Webber, Yves Saint-Laurent, and others have all worked with our students on campus. Abdellah El Maaroufi, one of our 1963 graduates, who eventually became Moroccan ambassador to the USA, is now one of our Board members, as are several ex-ambassadors. The interest these and other Board members have taken in the American School of Tangier (AST) testifies to the School’s commitment to excellence in American Education with a superior academic education, and with an unprejudiced world-view. AST is a founding member of the Mediterranean Association of International Schools. At present, there are approximately 292 students enrolled school-wide, with about 95 students in grades 9 through 12. Approximately 90% have Moroccan family heritage, though there are students enrolled from numerous European countries. All graduates are expected to attend post-secondary institutions upon graduation and AST boasts college acceptances from many of the best schools in the world (note attached page).
The American School of Tangier has not and does not employ a college counselor. AST is an SAT-I and SAT-II test center. However, historical records have not been kept. AST is in the process of retrieving and archiving these data. AST offers letter-based grades as representative of the following: Due to the school philosophy and the small calls size, students are not ranked at AST
* F is a failing grade. No credit is awarded. Due to the School philosophy and small class size, students are not ranked at AST. Faculty. The American School of Tangier has a stable faculty of varied nationalities (mostly American and Moroccan) with an extremely low turnover rate, which encourages successful long-range teacher and school development. Teachers support a 180-instructional day model that currently has three terms per school year.
All AST graduates earn a US high school diploma. In addition to direct instruction, there are recent options to earn supplemental on-line credits through two US universities. The American School of Tangier curriculum is American in nature with global influences. We do offer limited AP limited courses and have historically had few options (including French and Calculus). However, teachers support students to challenge AP examinations and provide academic support after the regular school day. Academics and Graduation Requirements. The American School of Tangier uses either a traditional repeating 7-class day or a 4-day alternating block schedule – depending on instructional needs. The school day traditionally begins at 835AM and finishes standard instruction at 335PM. There are two graduation streams – one for overseas students and one for Moroccan nationals. Overseas students follow a similar path as Moroccan students but have different language requirements. Because the majority of students are Moroccan, this also limits overseas students’ academic options. Regarding classes, all students must pass the minimum high school requirements to graduate. In addition, there is a narrow range of electives in which students may participate from the fine and performing arts to Studio Art; to additional History, Math, and Science electives. Noncredit activities include interscholastic sports, volunteerism, performance, and other activities.
