At the American School of Tangier, we use a dynamic American-based curriculum to prepare students for life after graduation as responsible global citizens. As all students are expected to apply and to attend colleges and universities, we provide the curriculum and opportunities to develop the higher level thinking skills necessary for life in the 21st Century. The AST Upper School is the place where students transition from the classroom to the adult world and our curriculum supports this transformation. Coursework is progressive, globally-focused, and designed to meet the highest educational standards around the world. Teachers use a thoughtful scope and sequence in each strand of learning to promote a solid base of knowledge, the ability to analyze critically, and effective problem-solving. In the AST Middle School years, Grades 6-8 students are offered a curriculum that supports their interests and developmental level. Here, we offer structured opportunities to develop personal opinions, collaborate in more meaningful ways, and develop interactions with peers through academic and social means. Teachers have high expectations and support students in ways consistent with the strong educational practice. The AST Lower School is a place for caring and understanding. The primary concern is for the development of the student as a complete person. The curriculum stresses not only academic fundamentals, but also skills needed to succeed as a human being: academic growth, effective communication, global appreciation, and community involvement. We deliver the basic curriculum through differentiated instruction and students work in groups that follow slightly different paths to arrive at the same destination. As an American School, we group students by age. Teachers understand that some students may need basic skills support while other may receive enrichment challenges. These different challenges make lower school classrooms lively, and students are supported as they develop a love of learning.
