TALIM owes its existence to the generosity of many donors beginning in 1821 with the King of Morocco, Moulay Souleiman, who gave the original site to the Americans. Over the centuries the Legation has changed its name and function from diplomatic mission to non-governmental organization (NGO) Today we are the Tangier American Legation Institute for Moroccan Studies (TALIM), a name that echoes our diplomatic past as well as our current activity as a privately-run institution. Our art collection, our rugs, our maps—even the books in our research library-- have all been the result of private donations. In fact, it was only because of the determined efforts of private individuals that we preserved this site as a historical landmark and, have breathed life into it with our conferences and outreach activities. We invite you to join us in this effort to promote learning and understanding locally and internationally.
